More barcode labels being scanned by US consumers

A new study from Scanbuy, the ScanLife mobile barcode developer, has shown that there has been a huge increase in traffic over the past year in the number of people using mobile phones to scan barcode labels and QR codes.

The company monitors traffic for a variety of brands in the United States and through its analysis found there had been a year-on-year increase of over 150 per cent.

More than 5 million users made use of the ScanLife iPhone app during the first quarter of the year, with the total volume of scans reaching 13 million – an increase of 157 per cent.

Through the data analysis, Scanbuy noticed that most of the scans were made with 2D barcodes, with UPC codes accounting for 24 per cent of the traffic.

These results show that marketers are realising that a new generation of tech-savvy customers are making good use of their smartphone devices to scan in mobile barcodes when making purchases or finding out information on products in the marketplace.

Here in the UK, a growing number of people are downloading the latest barcode apps available for their phones and so developers and companies are really starting to take notice of this trend.
